Alloy isn't released yet. These pages describe how it will work at 0.1.0 and get updated as it's built.

Installing

Linux

Download the AppImage, make it executable, and run it. It works on any x86_64 distro and updates itself.

chmod +x Alloy-*.AppImage
./Alloy-*.AppImage

Windows

Run the installer. It installs for your user only, so it doesn't need admin rights.

Windows SmartScreen

Alloy isn't code-signed yet, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" the first time. Click More info, then Run anyway. You only need to do this once.

Signing in

Alloy signs you in with your Microsoft account, in your normal browser. If the browser can't open, it shows a short code to enter at microsoft.com/link instead.

The account needs to own Minecraft: Java Edition. You can add several accounts and switch between them.

Where your files live

The first time Alloy opens, it asks where to keep its data: instances, downloaded Java, and the shared cache of game files. You can move it later in Settings.

Each instance has its own mods, worlds, resource packs and settings, so modded and vanilla setups never mix. Game files that are the same across versions are downloaded once and shared.

Websites and Discord messages can link straight into Alloy. It always asks before doing anything.

  • alloy://install/cytra/<mod-id> installs one of the mods on this site.
  • alloy://join/<server-address> launches an instance and joins that server.

Privacy

Alloy collects nothing. There are no analytics and no accounts with us. It only talks to the services it needs: Microsoft and Mojang to sign in and download the game, and Modrinth, CurseForge and GitHub when you browse or update mods.

Sign-in tokens are stored in your system keyring (Windows Credential Manager, or KWallet or GNOME Keyring on Linux). Crash logs are only uploaded if you click Share, and personal details are removed first.

Questions

Does it support macOS?

Not at the moment. Linux and Windows only.

Can I play without a Microsoft account?

No. You need a Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition.

Can I bring my instances from Prism or the official launcher?

Yes. Alloy can import from Prism, MultiMC, the official launcher, the Modrinth App and the CurseForge app. It copies files, so your old launcher keeps working.

How much memory does it use?

Around 100 MB with the window open. While you play, the window closes and a small tray process stays, so the game gets nearly all of it.

Is it open source?

It will be, under GPL-3.0, from the public 1.0 release.
